True that some artist don't progress beyond this (well, maybe not quite). But actually alot of the artists who look like they can't draw actually can - but have gone 'beyond' that (or regressed, if you prefer).
Even my own drawing - I can draw much more realistically than would usually be my personal choice.

I like the dynamic composition created by the diagonal element. The contrast between light and dark, solid and void, is also quite elemental.
